What Changed in the 2027 Silverado’s V8 Engines?

October 8th, 2026 by

The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 replaces its 5.3L and 6.2L gasoline V8s with new 5.7L and 6.6L engines. Both deliver more horsepower and torque, with changes to displacement, airflow, fuel injection, and lubrication beneath the hood.

For Lowell truck shoppers whose week includes work around Industrial Avenue and personal hauling on days off, compare the new engines’ power gains, engineering updates, and towing configurations to find the right fit.

The V8 Numbers: 2026 vs. 2027

The two replacements move the Silverado 1500 into GM’s sixth-generation Small Block V8 family.

6.2L 6.6L 420 to 481 hp 460 to 501 lb.-ft. Shop Now

That gives the 5.7L an increase of 47 horsepower and 45 lb.-ft. of torque. The 6.6L gains 61 horsepower and 41 lb.-ft. Both new V8s pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission—a transmission type also used with the outgoing V8s.

These changes apply to the light-duty Silverado 1500; Silverado HD has separate engine specifications.

What Changed Inside the New Silverado V8s?

The additional displacement comes from a 6 mm increase in piston stroke—the distance each piston travels inside its cylinder. Higher compression ratios, larger throttle openings, and new intake manifolds also contribute to the increased output.

The redesign also updates fuel delivery and lubrication:

  • Combined port and direct fuel injection: The new V8s use both injection methods, giving the fuel system more flexibility across operating conditions.
  • Revised lubrication: A continuously variable oil pump, an on-engine oil cooler, and revised oil-feed locations support more consistent oil pressure.

Which New V8 Fits Your Truck Priorities?

The 5.7L provides a step up in horsepower and torque from the previous smaller V8. If regular trips toward Tewksbury include a loaded equipment trailer, start your comparison with the trailer’s actual weight and the truck’s ratings.

The 6.6L delivers the higher horsepower and torque figures of the two new V8s. It is a naturally aspirated gasoline engine, meaning it operates without a turbocharger or supercharger. Availability depends on the truck configuration.

For a week that mixes driving along Pawtucket Boulevard with hauling on weekends, choose an engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, and equipment combination that fits both duties.

Does the Bigger V8 Tow More?

The 2027 Silverado 1500’s highest maximum towing rating comes with the 5.7L V8, rather than the higher-output 6.6L.

  • 5.7L V8: Up to 13,700 pounds when properly equipped. This maximum requires a Double Cab, Standard Bed, 2WD truck with the available Max Trailering Package.
  • 6.6L V8: Up to 9,700 pounds when properly equipped, in the specified Crew Cab, Short Bed or Standard Bed, 4WD configurations.

These published maximums compare different complete truck configurations; they do not isolate each engine’s towing ability. Cab, drivetrain, equipment, and vehicle weight also affect the rating.

For a boat-trailer trip to Lowell Heritage State Park, compare the loaded boat-and-trailer weight with the specific vehicle’s ratings. Review the Trailering section of its Owner’s Manual; cargo, passengers, options, and accessories can reduce the amount you can trailer.

Choose for the Whole Week, Not Just the Largest Load

An afternoon at Rogers Fort Hill Park is part of your truck’s routine, too. Consider everyday driving alongside your hauling and towing needs.

Before comparing configurations, have these details ready:

  • Your trailer’s loaded weight and hitch requirements.
  • The passengers, tools, and other cargo regularly carried in the truck.
  • Your preferred cab, bed, and drivetrain.
  • The balance of daily driving, hauling, and towing in your week.

If your routine also includes carrying passengers and sports gear to Cawley Memorial Stadium, account for that load when reviewing payload. Use the carrying-capacity label on the specific truck rather than an engine’s horsepower figure.
